While I wait…
I kneel down behind the couch while Isabelle answers the door. I know that I’m taking my chances but I have believed her so far and hope that this continues to be a good decision.
Their voices are loud enough for me to hear and I slowly start to relax. Isabelle is not saying anything and she’s not sending any signals.
I listen to the neighbor talk about how scary it is that there is someone on the loose and Isabelle agrees with her.
My heart beats faster and faster. My life is in her hands, but when has that not been the case over the last twenty-four hours?
These kinds of things are going to keep happening.
This is just a neighbor who knows nothing about me showing up and throwing my life into disarray. But what’s going to happen when there’s a real danger?
What’s going to happen when a police officer pulls me over?
What’s going to happen when someone recognizes me from my mug shot that’s all over the fucking news?
I don’t think this is going to end well for me. But what choice did I have? I couldn’t keep sitting in that cell when I saw an opportunity to run away.
I had to take a chance.
I’m innocent. I didn’t do any of those things they said. I didn’t kill anyone and I would never kill my wife.
So, what happens now?
How do I get away from here? I hear bits of their conversation. The roads are blocked and cops are behind barricades checking IDs… What do I do?
What’s my way out?
Maybe this is it.
Whatever happens, it’s not going to be good and Isabelle shouldn’t get more involved in this than she already is.
As I listen to her talk to her neighbor from behind the couch, I marvel at how little her voice has changed.
We met in seventh grade and we decided to go to our eighth grade dance together. I remember asking her and she said yes, but it wasn’t an official invitation.
It was all very casual, even though I wanted to go to the dance with her more than anything. Secretly, I knew that she wanted to go to the dance with me, too.
That’s the funny thing about being that age. You both want the same thing. You both care about each other as much as two people possibly can and yet you’re too afraid to let your feelings be known.
Why? Why was it so hard to expose your heart to another person? Fear of rejection.
Isabelle said that she didn’t want it to be a date so I couldn’t come to her house and pick her up as if it were one. I didn’t really care because it felt like a date and if we could spend some time together before hand then I was only happier.
Well, it just so happened that my dad came home from work that day at five, his usual time. I thought I had done everything, but I was so preoccupied with my non-date date that I forgot something.
